Joe Gomez went off injured against Burnley (Getty Images)Jurgen Klopp has hinted that Joe Gomez could face a lengthy spell out injured after the youngster was forced off on a stretcher during Liverpool’s 3-1 win over Burnley.
The 21-year-old had to be replaced by Trent Alexander-Arnold just 23 minutes into the game after being tackled by Burnley captain Ben Mee near the advertising boards behind the pitch.
Gomez looked to be in some pain as he left the pitch and afterwards Klopp suggested the injury could be a bad one with the defender set to undergo a scan tomorrow.
Speaking post-match, Klopp said: ‘It was his ankle. Joe is injured and probably not only a little bit. We have to see, we don’t know in the moment. We sent him home.’
If Klopp’s suspicions prove to be correct and Gomez is out for some time, it would be a monumental blow to Liverpool as he has been one of their most consistent players this season.
The youngster has established a rock-solid partnership with Virgil Van Dijk at the heart of Liverpool’s backline, helping the club to the best defensive record in the Premier League.
However, Klopp opted to rotate his side for the trip to Burnley, making seven changes which included Joel Matip being drafted in at centre-back, which pushed Gomez out to the right.
Gomez missed the Champions League final and the World Cup in the summer after having ankle surgery.
